John A. Smith & Son Ltd.

Our Company

Company Chairman John Smith established John Smith Builders in 1973 and quickly developed a reputation for quality projects throughout East Lothian, Midlothian and East Edinburgh.

Thirty-seven years later, John A Smith & Son Ltd has maintained this reputation and has built a large client base including East Lothian Council, The National Museums of Scotland, Torness Nuclear Power Station, Diageo at Glenkinchie Distillery, and countless individual clients.

Our People

The Company is still headed by John with his son, Donald Smith, as Construction Director with 36 years experience and Brian Thomson as Surveying Director with 35 years experience as a Quantity Surveyor in both private practice and contracting. The Company currently employs 28 local men skilled in groundworks, drainage, builder work, joiner work, plastering and tiling. We also have a well equipped workshop from which we produce high quality bespoke windows, doors and feature timber finishings.

We believe in training our own tradesmen and currently have three joiner apprentices and two mason and in fact two of our Foremen (now both in their 40's) joined the Company on apprenticeships from school. We have close working relationships with a variety of specialist subcontractors for all other trades which may be required on particular projects.

Our Ethos

We pride ourselves on the quality of our completed projects, and are extremely proud of the fact that in 2006 we won the Saltire Award for the best small building project in Scotland - Three Seton Mains, Longniddry.

We are also members of The Scottish Builders Federation, NHBC and Constructionline, and were recently selected to join the East Lothian Council's Framework for the Provision of Contractors.
